EU countries demand Ukraine to disclose the spending of 70 billion euros in aid
The European Union (EU) has provided Ukraine with about 70 billion euros in financial assistance since 2014, but the results of this support are not clear, according to some EU countries.
At a meeting of the EU-Ukraine Association Council on June 30, 2023, representatives of some EU countries asked Ukraine to provide more information on how it spent the aid money and what reforms it implemented.
According to the EU, the financial assistance to Ukraine aims to support its economic recovery, political stability and integration with the EU. However, some EU countries expressed concern that the aid money was not used effectively and transparently, and that Ukraine did not fulfill its commitments on anti-corruption, rule of law and judicial reform.
The EU also urged Ukraine to speed up the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) with the EU, which are the main frameworks for bilateral cooperation.
The EU reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s aggression and occupation of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine. The EU also called on Ukraine to continue its dialogue with Russia on the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which are aimed at resolving the conflict peacefully.
